I was born and raised in Hamilton Ontario. Both of my parents were deaf. The typical question I get is “was it different to be raised by two deaf parents?”, in reality I don’t know any different. All I know is that if you’re playing charades, you want me on your team.
Musically two events affected me deeply. When I was twelve I got a transistor radio for Christmas. The other moment was watching the Beatles and the Rolling Stones on television. I remember my grandparents and their reaction, and the reaction of the audience. I think at that point I realized what it is I wanted to do. A few Christmas’s later I got my first guitar. I loved the Beatles, the Stones, Dylan, Bowie, Aerosmith, Humble Pie, Pink Floyd, T – Rex and many more....
I’ve got married, gave up playing guitar, became a parent, picked up the guitar again and became unmarried. But, I still have my guitars.
I started playing acoustic blues, songs by my favourites, son House, Robert Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Johnny Shines, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and my favourite, Mississippi Fred Mc Dowell. On day somebody said to me and I wish I knew who they were. So that I could thank them, said “You are like every other blues singer, your singing songs that everyone else sings. Who is playing your songs?”
I started playing slide guitar by accident. I accidentally sliced my pinkie finger on my left hand. The cut was so deep I could not play guitar. I could not bend my hand over my guitar to make a cord. Necessity prevailed and I was able to place a slide over my pinkie and slipped my guitar into open tunings.
Well, they were right! I started writing and re writing then I released my first CD,”The Devil Left Me with Nothing”. A few years later and a separation followed by a divorce later I recorded “Here Comes the Rain”.
